February 11, 2008 Lake Tahoe Defensible Space Inspector
North Tahoe Fire Protection District seeking qualified applicants for Defensible Space Inspector for the 2008 season. Season runs April through November. Work under the direction of the Forest Fuels Program Manger. Individual will perform defensible space inspections within the Fire District boundaries on private and public property. Individual will interact with homeowners, homeowner associations and public agencies. Inspection data will be entered into a database and mapped using GIS software. Other duties may include public speaking, database management and other duties as prescribed by Forest Fuels Manager. Individual will drive District vehicles and work independent of other District crews. Employees work forty-hour workweeks with bi-weekly pay periods. This position will work under the Forest Fuels Program and is not a public safety division in the Fire District, but is a great way to get a start in a fire or forestry related career. Training will be provided for all duties performed. Salary: $14-16/hour. Minimum Qualifications: 18 years and valid Driver’s License. Desirable: Knowledge of fire, forestry or other natural resource. This is a full time staff opening for someone who is enthusiastic about educating the public on issues relating to Marine Debris and Sustainable Fisheries and coordinating volunteer events that provide the public with ways to become involved in marine conservation. January 16, 2008 - Diving Internships at Channel Island National Park
Diving Internships at Channel Islands National Park: Channel Islands National Park’s Kelp Forest Monitoring Program has two Student Conservation Association Internships available from April/May – September/October 2008. We will be looking for a Diver with a moderate amount of diving experience (preferably cold water, some vessel experience and excellent recommendations) to help collect long-term subtidal data on the kelp forest communities around the Channel Islands. A stipend will be available to the selected candidates of up to $640/month, $650/month for housing, and medical benefits.
The Interns primary duty will be to assist with all aspects of Channel Islands National Park’s long-term Kelp Forest Monitoring program to determine the status of living marine resources. The Intern will collect data on population dynamics of up to 70 species of fish, invertebrates and algae. Most data is collected underwater using SCUBA and surface-supplied air diving techniques. Interns will participate in all aspects of data acquisition and data management and help to prepare equipment, vessel, and food for multi-day remote offshore monitoring cruises and other trips.

The Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network (SIMoN), a program of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), requires the skill of a professional web programmer to assist with new and on-going web-based
projects. The SIMoN Web Programmer will primarily engage in development of SIMoN’s IOOS Observation Registry, a system for collecting and reporting on ocean research efforts across the United States. In addition, this position will assist other SIMoN staff with the maintenance and development of other web-based systems related to
various fields of ocean research.
This is a part-time (< 25 hrs/week) contract position through the non-profit Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation (MBSF), a partner of the MBNMS. Travel to Santa Cruz, CA is required one full day a week. Pay range is dependent on experience.
